The most common reason a luxury car rental goes wrong isn't the car, the price, or the route. It's something small that was missed before pickup - an expired license, an insurance gap, a deposit hold that catches someone off surprise. At Mogestic, we've seen every version of this, and the fix is always the same: a proper checklist before you book.
Here's ours. It covers everything you need to handle before your Mogestic vehicle gets delivered, so that when the car arrives, you're ready to drive - not scrambling.
1. Documents: Have These Ready Before You Call
Before you even book, make sure you have the following on hand. We'll verify them during the booking call, not at the curb.
- Valid driver's license: Must be current and unexpired for the entire rental period. If it's not in English or a Roman alphabet, you'll need an International Driving Permit as well. Temporary paper licenses may require additional verification.
- Credit card: In the primary renter's name. This is what we hold the security deposit against. Debit cards are accepted in some cases but come with higher holds and additional ID requirements. Prepaid cards won't work.
- Second form of photo ID: A passport or state ID card. We may ask for this during verification, especially for first-time renters.
- Insurance information: If you're using personal auto insurance, have your policy details and proof of coverage ready. If you want us to bind rental insurance for you, we'll quote it during booking.
2. Age and Eligibility
All three vehicles in the Mogestic fleet require drivers to be 25 or older for self-drive rentals. If you're between 21 and 24, ask about our chauffeured option - you can still ride, you just can't hold the wheel.
Your driving record matters too. We check - not to be difficult, but because a luxury vehicle with a bad driving record is a liability for everyone involved. If there are any flags on your record, call us and we'll talk through options.
3. Security Deposit: Know the Number Before You Book
Every luxury rental requires a security deposit hold on your credit card. This isn't a charge - it's a hold that gets released after the vehicle is returned in satisfactory condition. But the hold is real money that's unavailable to you during the rental period.
| Vehicle | Daily Rate | Typical Deposit Hold |
|---|---|---|
| Porsche 911 Carrera | From $558/day | $1,500-$3,000 |
| Mercedes G-Class | From $625-$650/day | $2,000-$3,500 |
| BMW XM | From $888/day | $3,000-$5,000 |
Exact deposit amounts depend on rental duration, your driving record, and whether you're using personal insurance or our rental coverage. We'll quote the specific hold before you book so there are no surprises on your card statement.
One tip: if your credit card has a low limit, call your bank before booking. The deposit hold plus the rental charge needs to fit within your available credit, and declined holds are the most common booking delay we see.
4. Insurance: Don't Assume
The single most common pre-rental mistake is assuming that personal auto insurance or a credit card's rental coverage will handle everything. It often doesn't - especially for luxury vehicles.
Here's what to check:
- Personal auto policy: Does it cover rental vehicles? Does it cover vehicles valued above a certain threshold? Many policies cap coverage at $50,000 or $75,000 in vehicle value. A Porsche 911, Mercedes G-Class, or BMW XM is well above that.
- Credit card rental coverage: Many premium cards offer a collision damage waiver, but this is typically secondary coverage - meaning you'd file with your personal insurance first. Check if your card covers the full vehicle value or just a portion.
- Rental company insurance: We offer collision damage waiver, supplemental liability, and personal accident coverage as add-ons. If your personal or card coverage has gaps, we'll bind what's needed. Get this sorted during booking, not at pickup.
If you're unsure, the simplest path is to let us bind full rental insurance for the duration. It adds to the daily rate but eliminates all coverage questions. We'll quote both options - with and without - when you call.
5. Plan Your Pickup and Return
Before booking, know two things: where you want the car delivered, and where you want it picked up from. These don't have to be the same location.
- Hotel delivery: We deliver to hotels, residences, and office addresses in Vancouver. Have the address ready when you book.
- YVR airport pickup: If you're arriving at YVR, provide your flight number so we can track delays. Schedule pickup 30-45 minutes after domestic landing, 60-90 minutes for international.
- Asymmetric return: Pick up at YVR, return downtown - or vice versa. Just tell us the plan when booking so we can schedule the team member.
6. At Pickup: The Inspection
When the car arrives, take five minutes before you drive off. This protects you and us.
- Walk around the vehicle: Check all four sides for scratches, dents, paint issues. Check bumpers, mirrors, and glass.
- Document with photos: Take time-stamped photos of all four sides and close-ups of any existing marks. Make sure the rental context is visible in the background.
- Note fuel and mileage: Record the fuel level and odometer reading. These should match your rental agreement.
- Check tire condition: Look for tread wear, sidewall damage, or unusual wear patterns.
- Test functionality: Make sure the climate control works, seatbelts buckle, lights operate, and no dashboard warning lights are on.
- Familiarize yourself: Spend two minutes getting comfortable with the controls. Luxury vehicles have different layouts - the PCM system in the Porsche, MBUX in the Mercedes, iDrive in the BMW. Know where everything is before you need it.
If you spot anything that doesn't match the rental agreement, report it immediately - before you drive off. Once you're moving, the pre-existing condition documentation is your protection against being held responsible for damage you didn't cause.
FAQ
What happens if my license expires during the rental period?
Your license must be valid for the entire rental. If it expires mid-rental, the rental is void. Renew before booking.
Can someone else drive the car I rent?
Only drivers registered and verified at booking are insured to drive. If you want to add a driver, call us before the rental starts so we can verify their license and record.
Do I need to bring proof of insurance to pickup?
If you're using personal insurance, yes - have your policy info and proof of coverage. If we're binding rental insurance for you, no - it's already handled.
What if my credit card doesn't have enough limit for the deposit?
Call your bank to request a temporary limit increase, or ask us about our chauffeured option - chauffeured rentals don't require the same self-drive deposit since you're not the one driving.
Should I refill the car before returning it?
Yes. Return the car with a full tank (or the same fuel level as pickup) to avoid premium refueling charges. If you can't refuel, let us know and we'll quote the refueling cost upfront.
How long does the deposit take to release?
Typically 3-5 business days after return, depending on your bank. The hold is released by us immediately upon satisfactory return, but your bank's processing time determines when the funds are available again.
Ready to Book?
If you've got your documents, know your insurance plan, and have a pickup location in mind, you're ready. The call takes about 10 minutes and we handle the rest.

Pro tip: Call a day or two before you need the car, not the morning of. Pre-booking lets us secure the exact vehicle you want, bind insurance properly, and schedule delivery without rush fees. Same-day bookings work, but they cost more and limit vehicle availability.
