The rental day gets all the attention - picking the car, planning the route, the drive itself. But the return? Most people hand over the keys and walk away. That's fine until a deposit hold shows up on your card a week later, or a damage charge appears for something you didn't do.
At Mogestic, the return process is straightforward, but there are a few things every renter should do after the car goes back to make sure the rental closes cleanly. Here's our post-rental checklist.
Before You Hand Over the Keys
The return inspection starts before the Mogestic team member arrives. Take 10 minutes and do your own audit first:
- Walk around the vehicle: Check all four sides for scratches, dents, paint issues, or curb rash on wheels. Look at the roof and hood - these are the most commonly missed areas.
- Check the interior: Seats, dashboard, door trims, headliner. Make sure you haven't left any personal items in the glove box, console, trunk, or under seats.
- Check tire condition: Look for tread wear or sidewall damage that may have occurred during the rental.
- Verify functionality: Make sure all controls work - climate, lights, windshield wipers. Confirm no dashboard warning lights are on.
- Check fuel and mileage: Note the fuel level and odometer reading. These should match what's on your rental agreement at return.
Document the Return
Before the Mogestic team member takes the car, photograph everything. This is your protection against post-rental damage claims.
- Four corner shots: Two full sides of the car visible in each frame, covering all four angles.
- Close-ups: Any existing marks, all four wheels, bumpers, windshield.
- Fuel gauge and odometer: Photo with both visible in the same frame.
- Interior shots: Seats, dashboard, trunk - show the condition at return.
- Context shot: The car with the return location visible in the background to confirm time and place.
Keep these photos for at least 3-4 months after your rental. If a damage charge appears later, the photos are your evidence.
Refuel Before You Return
Return the car with a full tank (or the same fuel level as pickup). If you don't refuel, we'll quote the refueling cost upfront - but it's always cheaper to fill up yourself at a gas station close to the return location.
Keep the fuel receipt and photograph it on the dashboard with the fuel gauge and odometer visible in the same frame. This proves the fuel level at return and eliminates disputes.
The Return Inspection With Our Team
When the Mogestic team member arrives, insist on walking through the inspection together. Don't just hand over the keys and leave.
- Walk the car together. If new damage is identified, compare it to your pre-rental photos. If it was there when you picked the car up, it's not your charge.
- Request the incident report. If damage is noted, ask for a physical or emailed copy before you leave.
- Get your final receipt. It should show the date, time, mileage, fuel level, and any damage notes. Review it before you walk away.
- Confirm the return location. If you're returning at a hotel, YVR, or a specific address, confirm that's where the team member is logging the return.
After the Return: Deposit Release
The security deposit hold is released by us immediately upon satisfactory return - but when the funds actually become available on your card depends on your bank.
| Card Type | Typical Release Time | What to Do if Delayed |
|---|---|---|
| Credit card | 3-7 business days | After 7 business days, call us to confirm release. Then call your bank. |
| Debit card | 7-14 business days | After 14 business days, call us for release confirmation. Then contact your bank. |
Important: Weekends and public holidays don't count as business days. A return on Friday evening means the 3-7 day clock starts Monday.
If the hold persists beyond the typical window:
- After 3 business days (credit): Check if a final transaction has posted. If yes, the authorization hold is a "shadow" that will disappear on its own.
- After 7 business days (credit) / 10 (debit): Call us and ask if we've released the authorization. Request written confirmation.
- After 10 business days (credit) / 15 (debit): Contact your bank. Ask them to remove the authorization hold with merchant confirmation.
- After 20 business days: This is abnormal. Contact us and your bank with your documentation ready.
Personal Belongings Check
Before you walk away from the car, check every compartment:
- Glove box
- Center console storage
- Under seats
- Trunk / cargo area
- Cup holders
- Door pockets
Phone mounts, charging cables, sunglasses, and parking change are the most common items left behind. If you find something, take it. If you realize later that you left something, call us immediately - we'll check the vehicle and hold any found items for pickup.
Feedback and Reviews
After your Mogestic rental, we want to hear how it went - especially if something could be better. Here's how to give feedback that actually helps:
- Tell us directly: Call or email with specific feedback. "The chauffeured pickup was 10 minutes late" is more useful than "the service was bad." We fix specific problems.
- Review us online: If the experience was good, a review helps other renters find us. If it wasn't, tell us first so we can address it before it costs us the next customer.
- Complete the post-rental survey: If we send one, it takes 2 minutes and the data genuinely shapes how we operate.
FAQ
What if I damaged the car during the rental?
Tell us at return. We'll document it during the inspection and quote any charges. If you have photos from the drive showing when the damage occurred, share them - it helps us assess whether it was pre-existing or new.
Can I extend my rental after the return time?
Only if you call before the booked end time. Once the car is returned, the rental is closed. If you need more time, call us during the rental and we'll extend it.
Why is my deposit hold higher than the rental charge?
The hold covers the rental plus a security buffer for potential damage, fuel, or mileage overages. The buffer is released with the deposit once the car passes return inspection. We quote the exact hold before booking.
Do you charge for mileage overages?
It depends on your booking. Some rentals include unlimited mileage; others have a daily cap with per-mile charges over the limit. Check your rental agreement - if there's a cap, we'll have noted it at booking.
What if I returned the car after hours?
That's fine. We handle after-hours returns with photo documentation. Just leave the car in the agreed return location, photograph everything as outlined above, and call us the next morning to confirm the return.
How long should I keep my rental documents?
At least 3-4 months. For longer or international rentals, keep them for a full year. You'll need them if a deposit dispute, damage claim, or mileage question comes up later.
Need Help Post-Rental?
If you have questions after your return - about a deposit, a charge, or anything else - call us. We'd rather fix it than lose you.

Pro tip: The most common post-rental issue we see is a deposit hold that takes longer than expected to release. This is almost always a bank processing delay, not a charge. Before you worry, check whether a final transaction has posted to your card. If yes, the hold is a shadow that will fall off within a few days. No call needed.
