Time needed: 45-60 minutes of driving, plus stops

The G-Class absorbs the road, seats five if you're sharing the drive, and the snow tires are irrelevant in July but the all-wheel drive gives confidence on the waterfront sections. The Porsche 911 works too, but the Seawall loop is a cruise, not a driving-experience route.

Route 2: Marine Drive to Horseshoe Bay

Time needed: 40-45 minutes of driving

Best vehicle: Porsche 911 Carrera ($558/day) or BMW XM ($888/day)

Marine Drive on Vancouver's North Shore runs from Horseshoe Bay to North Vancouver, winding along the ocean with mountain views to the east. It's a cliffside road - ocean on one side, forest on the other - and it's one of the most photogenic drives in the region.

Why the XM for content creators: If you're filming or photographing the drive, the XM's 16-speaker audio system and premium cabin make the stops more comfortable, and the vehicle itself is a more dramatic subject against the ocean backdrop. Worth the premium if content is the goal.

Route 3: Sea-to-Sky Highway to Whistler

Time needed: 2 hours of driving, plus stops (plan a full day)

Best vehicle: Mercedes G-Class ($625-$650/day)

The Sea-to-Sky Highway (Highway 99) from Vancouver to Whistler is regularly called one of the best drives in the world. 120 kilometers of road that climb from sea level along Howe Sound through mountain valleys to the resort town of Whistler. In summer, every stop along this route is at its best.

• Weekend ferry traffic: Marine Drive gets congested on summer weekend afternoons. Go mid-morning instead.
• Stanley Park bike lane: One lane is now bicycles only. You can't pass cars in that lane - plan your speed ahead.
• Winter restrictions are lifted: Highway 99 no longer requires winter tires or chains from approximately April through October. Any vehicle in our fleet is cleared for the Sea-to-Sky.
• Plan your stops: The Sea-to-Sky has six+ legitimate stop-worthy points. Build them into your timing so you're not rushing between highlights.
• Fuel up before Whistler: The return trip is the same distance. Start with a full tank so you're not refueling mid-route.

Tight but possible. The Seawall Loop and Marine Drive together take about 2 hours of driving - doable in a morning. The Sea-to-Sky to Whistler is a full afternoon. If you want all three, book from 9 AM to 9 PM and plan a long day. The G-Class is the only vehicle versatile enough for all three.

Is the Sea-to-Sky Highway safe for luxury SUVs in summer?

The XM works on all three, but at $888/day it's a significant premium over the G-Class. We'd only recommend the XM for the Sea-to-Sky if you specifically want the XM's cabin, audio system, and presence for a content or VIP trip. For pure driving, the G-Class or 911 deliver better value.

Do I need to reserve parking at Stanley Park stops?

No. Stanley Park Drive is a continuous road - you don't park, you drive. If you want to get out at a stop like Prospect Point or Brockton Point, look for street parking nearby or use a parkade in Coal Harbour.
