The Admitted Rate vs. What You Actually Pay
Here's the thing about car rental pricing that nobody likes to talk about: the number on the website is almost never the number on your receipt. It's not necessarily deception — it's just that the rental industry has spent decades building a pricing structure where the base rate gets you in the door, and everything else gets tacked on after you're committed.
For luxury car rentals in Vancouver, the gap between advertised and actual is even wider. You're not renting a $25,000 Corolla. You're renting a $200,000-plus BMW XM or a Porsche 911 Carrera, which means every percentage point of tax, every insurance add-on, and every surcharge scales accordingly.
At Mogestic, we've built our pricing to be transparent from the first quote. But to understand what that means, it helps to know what the rest of the industry is charging you for — often without making it obvious.
The Standard Fee Stack
Here's what a typical luxury car rental in Vancouver looks like once you get past the headline rate:
| Fee Type | Typical Cost | What It Actually Is |
|---|---|---|
| Provincial Tax (PST + GST) | 12% of base rate | BC sales tax — legally required, unavoidable |
| Airport Concession Fee | 10–20% of base rate | YVR charges rental companies for the privilege of operating at the airport; they pass it to you |
| Supplemental Insurance | $80–$200/day | CDW/LDW for luxury vehicles — mandatory on most exotic fleets since personal policies don't cover $75K+ vehicles |
| Additional Driver | $10–$20/day | Per extra authorized driver |
| Young Driver Surcharge | $20–$200/day | Under 25 (or under 30 for some luxury vehicles) |
| GPS Navigation | $5–$20/day | Often redundant if you have a phone — but they charge it anyway |
| Roadside Assistance | $5–$7/day | Flat tire, dead battery, lockout coverage |
| Security Deposit Hold | $2,000–$15,000 | Credit hold, refunded on return — but it ties up your funds |
| Pickup/Delivery Fee | $150–$250 | Airport or hotel delivery service charge |
On a 3-day BMW XM rental at $888/day, a standard competitor's fee stack could add $600–$1,200 on top of the $2,664 base rate. That's not a rounding error. That's a second car payment.
How Mogestic Handles Each Fee
Taxes
We include provincial taxes in every quoted rate. The number you see on our site is the number you pay. No 12% surprise at checkout.
Airport Surcharges
If you pick up at YVR, there's a real concession cost we can't eliminate — but we disclose it upfront in your quote, not at the rental counter. And if you're flexible on pickup location, our downtown and hotel delivery options can reduce or eliminate this charge entirely.
Insurance
This is where most luxury renters get caught. Standard personal auto insurance and most credit card coverages don't apply to vehicles valued above $75,000 — which is every car in our fleet. We include primary third-party liability in every rental and offer optional CDW/LDW at a rate that's competitive with ICBC's standalone Rental Vehicle Policy (approximately $10/day). For a Porsche 911 at $558/day, that's a fraction of the base rate — not the $80–$200/day some competitors charge for the same coverage.
Additional Drivers
We don't charge per additional driver. Your rental agreement covers authorized drivers on the contract at no extra cost. Bring your spouse, your business partner, your designated driver — they're all on the same contract.
GPS and Roadside Assistance
Every Mogestic vehicle comes with built-in navigation (BMW Curved Display, Mercedes MBUX, Porsche infotainment) and 24/7 roadside assistance included. There's no optional add-on because there's nothing optional about it — it's part of the car.
Security Deposit
We require a security deposit like everyone else — $2,000–$5,000 depending on the vehicle — but we hold it transparently and release it within 48 hours of return. Our deposit breakdown page shows exactly how the hold works and when it lifts. No guessing.
Pickup and Delivery
YVR airport pickup is included in your rental. Downtown hotel delivery is included. No $150–$250 service charge tacked on. If you want the car brought to your Vancouver hotel, that's part of the service.
What Mogestic Doesn't Charge
- No mileage caps. Every rental comes with unlimited kilometers. Drive to Whistler and back twice — no per-km surcharge.
- No additional driver fees. Covered above.
- No GPS add-on. Built into the car.
- No roadside assistance add-on. Included.
- No one-way rental fee. Pick up and return wherever works for you within our service area.
- No fuel charges. We operate full-to-full. Return the car with a full tank and there's no fuel charge. Return it empty and we'll refuel at cost — not at a markup.
The Real Cost Comparison
| Typical Competitor | Mogestic | |
|---|---|---|
| BMW XM 3-day base | $2,664 ($888×3) | $2,664 ($888×3) |
| Taxes (12%) | +$319.68 | Included |
| Airport fee (15%) | +$399.60 | Included or disclosed at quote |
| Insurance (CDW) | +$240–$600 ($80–$200/day) | +$30 ($10/day optional) |
| Additional driver | +$30–$60 | $0 |
| GPS | +$15–$60 | $0 (built-in) |
| Roadside assistance | +$15–$21 | $0 (included) |
| Pickup/delivery | +$150–$250 | $0 |
| 3-Day Total | $3,832–$4,074 | $2,694 |
That's a difference of $1,100–$1,380 on a single 3-day rental. Not a marketing exaggeration — just the difference between a pricing model built on disclosure and one built on post-commitment add-ons.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do other companies charge so much for insurance on luxury cars?
Because most personal auto insurance policies and credit card coverages explicitly exclude vehicles above a certain value threshold — typically $75,000. Since every car in our fleet exceeds that, standard insurance doesn't apply. Some competitors use this gap to upsell expensive supplemental policies. We include primary liability and offer optional CDW at cost.
Is the security deposit refundable?
Yes. The deposit is a credit hold, not a charge. It releases within 48 hours of returning the vehicle in the condition it was delivered. Our deposit breakdown page explains the exact hold amounts per vehicle.
Can I avoid the airport concession fee entirely?
If you're flexible on pickup location, yes. Our downtown and hotel delivery options don't carry the YVR concession fee. If you specifically need airport pickup, we'll disclose the fee in your initial quote — not at the counter.
What happens if I return the car with less than a full tank?
We refuel at our cost — not at a marked-up rate. Most competitors charge a premium per-liter refueling fee. We pass through the actual cost of the fuel without markup.
Are there any fees you do charge?
Optional CDW/LDW insurance ($10/day), the security deposit hold ($2,000–$5,000 depending on vehicle, refunded on return), and late return fees if you return significantly past your agreed time without notice. That's the full list.
Do you charge for cross-border travel to the US?
Many rental agreements prohibit cross-border travel. At Mogestic, we allow it on request — just let us know at booking so we can note it on your agreement. No additional fee.
Always Ask for the Total
The single most important thing you can do before any luxury car rental — whether from us or anyone else — is ask for the total. Not the base rate. The total, including taxes, insurance, and every fee. If the number changes between the quote and the counter, that's a problem. If it doesn't, you're dealing with an operator who prices honestly.
